Long Weekends and Lessons for Self-Care

Millions of Americans are relishing the fact that they don’t have to wake up and go to work tomorrow like they normally would on a Monday, courtesy of Labor Day. I’ve always thought it ironic that a day called Labor Day was a day when so few labored, instead hosting cook-outs and savoring the extra hours of sleep they get.

And don’t get me wrong, I am just as happy about the added time away from the office as the next person. In some ways, perhaps I appreciate the weekend even more, as it is a chance to recharge my batteries and focus on self-care.

Self-care has always been something I struggle with. I know the things I am supposed to be doing, things like meditation and journaling. Yet I can never seem to develop the dedication to consistently perform these important bits of self-care. And while it can be easy to use the hustle and bustle of the work week as an excuse, during a long weekend I have no real excuse. And that is a good thing.

There unfortunately is no holiday from the battle with mental illnesses. So the lessons of this long weekends for me must be an added chance to focus on self-care. Hopefully, others who are also facing their own battles.

So as I relax, and enjoy the cook-outs and beers that are so typical of this long weekend, I will also be trying to find more time to journal, more time to meditate, and more time for self-care in general. Maybe, if I am lucky, I will be able to dive into this shortened week with a fresh foothold in my battle with mental illness.
