A Day of Rest

The last few weeks have been very busy, with some distinct highs (such as my vacation) and lows (such as issues that have popped up at work), but all together it has led to me feeling very burnt out and needing a day of rest where I can completely recharge. Today being Sunday, it seems like the perfect day to do that.

Having anxiety, and specifically social anxiety issues, can be exhausting. Venturing out of the house, travelling, interacting with people and crowds all drain me of energy and eventually I get to the point where I am just completely drained.

I am sure everyone gets run down as long days turn into long weeks, but with mental illness it is an all encompassing exhaustion where even getting up to walk a few steps to the bathroom can seem overwhelming, much less feeding yourself, showering, or any of the normal daily activities.

And that is why it is so important to force yourself to take a day and recharge, so that you can recover before you get to that point.

Unfortunately, this is where the lies of mental illness can come in. They come in telling you that you are lazy, that you shouldn’t be taking time for yourself. That it is selfish. That it is creating a burden for your family. Yet, as I said, these are just lies.

Taking care of yourself is not selfish. It is necessary so that you can function and meet the obligations you have to other people. It is not your choice to struggle with a mental illness, but you can choose to take steps to take care of yourself. It is not something you should be embarrassed about by any means. Because ultimately, it will help you get better, and that is the most important goal. One that will benefit everyone. And so on that note I am off to enjoy the rest of my day of rest.
