Damn These Decisions

Decisions are hard for me. I mean, I usually know what I want to do, but then my anxiety monster gets its talons into me and I start to worry whether it is the ‘right’ and how will people react to this decision.

And this is hard because just think about how many decisions you have to make. It is one of the many ways that anxiety is constantly present for me. Yes, medication and therapy have made it better, but there are still times I find myself saying damn these decisions.

And some people might sometimes get frustrated with what they perceive to be indecision. They tell me, “just make a choice,” unaware that that is just adding to my anxiety.

While I once tried to desensitize myself to the anxiety, in hopes that it would go away completely, I now realize that anxiety is unfortunately always going to be a part of my life, and I have to learn how to cope with the anxiety of my decisions. Here are some things that work for me:

  1. Meditation;
  2. Talk therapy;
  3. Reminding myself that most, if not all, of these decisions won’t matter in the grand scheme of my life; and
  4. Learning to accept without judgment that anxiety is just a part of my process.

Hopefully, if decision-making is something you struggle with as well, you’ve discovered some tools to help you. If so, feel free to share them if you feel so inclined. I love hearing from readers about what works for them.
